 Mochima National Park

Venezuela, East

English (Traducir este texto en Español): Mochima National Park (Parque Nacional Mochima) is a Venezuelan national park in the state of Sucre, Venezuela.

Named after the town of Mochima, it is just one of a number of national parks along Venezuela's northeast Caribbean coastline. Created in 1973 it was the second marine park in Venezuela and encompasses the entire shoreline between Puerto La Cruz and Cumaná plus 32 islands just offshore.

The waters around Puerto La Cruz rarely have strong currents. We have many dive sites to choose from: deep and shallow reefs, caverns (can always see the entrance), wrecks, even bubbles and thermal waters! The three different island groups give us varied diving.

Venezuela is still an unknown to many divers, but that only makes it more special. With the waters of the Orinoco River emptying in front of the Island of Trinidad, and west of us a very deep part of the ocean which brings an upwelling of cold water and nutrients, the waters of Mochima National Park are a breeding place for all kinds of fish. Species are still being discovered here!
Usually our boat will be the only one at a dive site!

Water temperature: July-November 23º-29º December-March, 21°-25° ; April-June, 22°-28°. At 5-8 meters the temperature drops 1-2 degrees.

Visibility is best during the warmer part of the year, although the changing world climate seems to be bringing better visibility to us! It can also change from one part of the park to the other. July to November, 2-3 stars; December-March, 1-2 stars; April to June, 1-3 stars.

Soft coral, hard coral, sponges, tube worms, spaghetti worms, christmas tree worms, more kinds of anemones than anywhere else in the world, great variety and quantity of all reef fish, spotted morays, often large snappers and groupers, cleaner shrimp stations, large hermit crabs, trumpet fish, spotted drums, angel fish, butterfly fish attacking the eggs of the Sergeant Major, occasionally a ray or turtle are all seen at the different dive sites.

There are three distinct island groups each a little different from each other: the Chimanas, Borracha and Caracas Island groups besides many smaller individual islands. Spectacular rock formations make diving here very special.
